Markosia Spotlight On: No Romance

covers_new.inddEach week we’ll be turning the spotlight on one of the many quality graphic novels from our extensive back catalogue.

This week it’s the turn of No Romance.

Relationships are never easy. Just ask Matt, Dave, and Jon. Join these three thirty-something friends for a pint in the local pub as they recall their latest relationship triumphs and mishaps. Each one of them attempts to smoothly navigate their way through a relationship and hide the fact, that like most of us, they have no idea what they’re doing.

Our three romantics each begin a relationship and are eager to share the juicy details with their drinking buddies. Matt is tall, good looking and charming. He meets Amy at a bar and goes to great efforts to woo her by coming across as mysterious, and showing that his generosity knows no bounds. Dave is artsy and nonconventional. He gives the world of internet dating a try and meets some ‘interesting’ characters. Eventually, he meets the lovely, but chatty, Melissa. Will Dave’s famous gaffes and legendary fear of commitment ruin their first date? Or will his quirky way of doing things win Melissa over? Jon has had enough of dating and relationships. He is depressed to hear his two best friends are in the dating game yet again. However, while out drinking with the lads his weakness for emotionally distressed goth girls is exposed and before he knows what’s happening Jon is on a date with Helena.

Will their relationships have happy endings or are Jon, Matt, and Dave destined to check into the Heartbreak Hotel? Join us to find out in a comic that Mark Waid (Kingdom Come, Superman: Birthright) calls “True to Life… almost tragically so.”

Markosia Spotlight On: Nicodemus Flynn

covers_new.inddEach week we’ll be turning the spotlight on one of the many quality graphic novels from our extensive back catalogue.

This week it’s the turn of Nicodemus Flynn.

The world contains many shadows, and some are far darker and deeper than others,
hiding things which most people cannot imagine. But there are those aware of the
truth: that strange creatures and forces have always existed both in this world and in the
unseen worlds around us.

For years, when the more malevolent of these forces have emerged to prey upon the
innocent, Nicodemus Flynn has stood in their way, having dedicated his life to this purpose.

Now, when an arrogant occultist resurrects the savage and powerful beast named the
Pariah, Nick sets out to return it to the grave before it can unleash the slaughter at which
it excels, while in the process uncovering the truth behind the mysterious, overriding
drive with which the Pariah has been reborn.

The Pariah was originally killed centuries ago by a man who sacrifi ced his own life
to do so. And as Nick hunts one of the most relentless creatures he has ever faced, the
question arises: must history repeat itself in order for the Pariah to be defeated?

The Pariah will not falter.

It will not stop.

But neither will Nicodemus Flynn.

Markosia Spotlight On: Stuff That Happened

covers_new.inddEach week we’ll be turning the spotlight on one of the many quality graphic novels from our extensive back catalogue.

This week it’s the turn of Stuff That Happened.

This book is a collection of comic strips created between 2013 and 2014 by artist Vicky Stonebridge, who lives and works in the Scottish Highlands. At the time this series of unrelated anecdotes were originally created as occasional blog posts. They were designed to be drawing exercises, to entertain friends and later they became therapeutic, capturing funny or poignant “Stuff that Happened” as she went about her business as a fire-fighter, art tutor and community worker.

Vicky was travelling between her home in the wild, rural, West coast to Inverness for work and then to the sandy beaches of the East coast to spend time with the new man in her life, Andrew. Her constant companion was her dog Bruno. Both dog and mother of three were coming to terms with an empty nest and dealing with a range of anxieties and PTSD. For Bruno the answer was simple, to never leave Vicky’s side. Vicky had to worry about how to carve out a new life and new identity without other people to look after. But she didn’t have time to really come to terms with these changes, before a much bigger, more dramatic change forced itself into the narrative. She became seriously ill. This story covers the period of time when she became symptomatic with her illness, and was in and out of hospital for tests and emergency treatment.

Would she be able to work again? How would she survive financially? How ill was she? Would she be able to go back to fire fighting? It seems a person’s body can only undergo so much physical work and stress before something has to change, and this period in Vicky’s life was where change was forced upon her. It has taken her three years since this time to be able to finish the original pencilled roughs. When we are living in the moment, it is difficult to see the thread which binds events as they happen – we are too close to it. But with hindsight, this book is an honest and personal tale of a life changing illness, stress, worry and more importantly, the little moments in life that make it worth living no matter what stuff happens.

Markosia Spotlight On: Mi Sweethart

covers_new.inddEach week we’ll be turning the spotlight on one of the many quality graphic novels from our extensive back catalogue.

This week it’s the turn of Mi Sweethart.

Mi Sweethart is easily the world’s greatest secret agent, it’s really no contest. But a holiday would be nice, so for the first time since she was eighteen, Mi is taking a break … or she would be if it weren’t for the sword-wielding assassin in her back garden. Thanks to Mi’s unihemispheric sleep pattern (it’s a real thing, look it up!), Mi never has to stop.

While some would squander this extra time watching acclaimed TV drama, Mi has spent it becoming the best at everything, but will being the best be enough for what’s coming? Mi Sweethart could beat up your Dad. #nodadissafe

“Head and Nutkins craft a mighty fine tale of espionage mixed with excellent tongue in cheek humour. They clearly had a blast making it.”
Rob Guillory – Chew

“A fantastic new anti-heroine: violent, terrifying, and hilarious.”
